Why Borg?

First of all, a disclaimer: The Borg language presented here is entirely my own invention. It has no connection with Star Trek or sanction from Paramount. As far as I know, we've never heard any words of Borg in any Star Trek program or movie. I made everything up from scratch.

So, why did I call it "Borg"? Couldn't I just have easily called it "Gek" or something? Well, I call it Borg for two reasons:

First, the language had actually been in development for several months without any name at all. I'd already settled many points of grammar: I knew that o was the vowel that indicated persons and that the plural sign was r. One day I was looking over my notes, and the combination or for some reason suggested the combination orgh, probably because I'm also a student of Klingon, in which rgh is a not-uncommon word ending. Once I had orgh, it didn't take a genius to think of adding a b. The coincidence was too good to ignore. All that remained was to come up with a good definition for b_gh.

Second, my wife has pointed out that the language Borg resembles the species Borg: just as the Collective expands by assimilating new species, so do the words of Borg expand by assimilating word elements within themselves. Again, the serendipity could not be ignored.

Once I'd decided that this was the language of the Borg, vocabulary building and the culture behind the language were molded to fit our image of the Borg, and a few back-fits were made to accomodate the few Borg names we know. And so, finally, borgh tve vagh, the language of the Borg.
