Tengwar: The Elvish Languages

The Elvish Languages

I have recently fallen under the spell of the beautiful languages created by J. R. R. Tolkien for his masterwork The Lord of the Rings. Most people, I think, are most familiar with the "High-Elvish" language Quenya, but I think I prefer the language of the Elves of Middle-Earth, Sindarin. It seems warmer and more like a living language to me, somehow.

I don't have any original material here. My knowledge of the tongues of the Eldarin is too new for that, and besides, there are numerous excellent sites on the Web. There's no need for me to re-invent the wheel. Below are a few of them, the ones I admire the most:

Ardalambion

or, "Of the Tongues of Middle-Earth". An excellent site run by Helge K. Fauskanger, full of comprehensive information on all of Tolkien's invented languages. This should be the first stop for anyone interested in Tolkien linguistics!

You can find a printable version of the Quenya Corpus Wordlist from Ardalambion in .RTF format here (in a .ZIP file). This was prepared by me and includes an English-Quenya index in the back. It is provided here by permission.

Elvish Linguistic Fellowship

One of the original sites, packed with good information and useful links.

Fellowship of the Word-Smiths

An offshoot of the above, and containing lots of original texts in both Quenya and Sindarin.

Dan Smith's Tengwar Fonts

Dan Smith has created some beautiful fonts for printing texts in Tolkien's invented alphabet, the tengwar (the title at the top of this page is in Dan Smith tengwar, using the English mode). He also has extensive instructions and word-processor macros to help you use them.

Mellonath Daeron

or, "Forodrim Language Guild". This site also has some useful tips for using the tengwar, as well as some phrasebooks and wordlists.
